The
are live! I have spent the last 5 days planning (as much as I could), as promised in my kickoff post. I’m feeling good about things! As a reminder, check out the Lunar Awards page FAQ to get the low-down on what requirements for this effort. What have we got?
The planning I have done so far has been fruitful. Immediately after firing off that kick-off post, and made some good progress. It looks like we are going TIME TRAVEL folks! I remembered the poignant ending I had previously planned, jotted some quick notes about how the story should go. Off the top of my head I had six benchmark events I wanted to hit in the story, but in 2,500 words that’s less than 500 words per event. I also tried writing a quick test, and quickly realized that I had trouble with the selected POV as well.
By Day 2 I had condensed the main events down to three, and started asking questions, so I could figure out what information I needed to convey to support these events. I managed to expand on the premises and get an idea of what events have to happen in what order. I settled on a point-of-view for the story, and the setting started to take shape.
On Day 3, I started trying to structure the supporting information with the three main events in the sequence, and I started writing just to try a quick taste test. It tasted good. A lot of times in stories I will think of twists and turns as I write, and also realize some information just isn’t fun and story worthy. I started worrying about this—but then I realized I am giving myself more time to edit than to write. The hard part is just to get the words on the page.
Then I had a busy weekend and I didn’t plan much for days 4 and 5…whoops!
Despite that, I am closing out the planning phase with what I feel is a good horse-sense of my story plan and even a burgeoning draft of the story.
A Hint As To The Story
I have fully committed to the story I called The Time-Traveling Salesman in the previous Lunar Awards post. Here’s a quick draft synopsis:
A Time-Traveling salesman makes a fortune defrauding people. He has every THING he wants, yet struggles with creeping self-doubt. When the authorities catch on to his time-defying scam, he must choose: should he protect his immense wealth, or seek a meaningful life?
Next Steps
The plan now is to finish writing my story, whether I hit the word count or not, by Saturday 4/8 and I’ll publish another check-in! Then the dire EDITING PHASE begins!
Thank you for following along this journey with me! If you are writing your own entry for the Lunar Awards, how is your story coming? Share a status update in the comments, let’s hype each other up!
Godspeed, all Lunar Awards competitors!
