Crunch: Write about a character who is starting to open up to life again
(source)
I got bored. Bored of life. I’ve lived for five thousand years. I’ve seen it all. Done it all. What was left for me to do? It’s actually surprisingly difficult to pass yourself off as a normal person—it’s exhausting speaking to mortals. They talk so fast, they have such short attention spans. I used to, too. I get it. But after the first thousand years, I understood—this was a long haul thing.
So that’s why I buried myself, you understand? I could just wait. It would be hungry, sure, but I could sleep, I could rest my eyes. I could take a break from all the noise and lights.
I just wanted a break. I lost track of time—just the slow pressure of the earth above my little grave became a monotonous hum—the boards held up surprisingly well over time. I picked a good spot.
So now you’ve dug me up, and yeah, I was a little disappointed. You all were moving so fast, talking so loud. I just wanted to be left alone—but you dug me up. I didn’t ask for this. I was going to come out when I wanted to.
I see you’ve got some new toys to play with and new sights and sounds. Maybe I’ll check them out. Maybe I’ll just go back to sleep until they are all dust again.
But either way, it’s you who have disturbed me. Now kindly, go away. I’ll just find something to eat.
