Today we have another Crunch!
In the Writing Gym, a Crunch is an exercise where I take a prompt and have to write something compelling in 250 words. I have many other writing exercises in the hopper, so keep an eye out for those!
If you have ideas for Prompts, Crunches, or other writing exercises in the future, please leave them in the comments! If you would like to write your own take for this Crunch, please comment with a link so that I can see what you wrote and support your work, maybe even share your version with my subscribers. Please let me know if you have any thoughts, comments, or constructive criticisms as well!
Enjoy!
Crunch: Write about a Peasant at the end of the world.
I couldn’t hear the rooster crow this morning, what for the squadron of bombers flying overhead. Good thing I was already awake.
I took the jet engines as a sign it was time to start my day. I put my coffee mug in the sink, Mama would be up soon, and she would forgive me for leaving a mess there. I step out the door and first thing I always do is take a deep breath. The air was cool and moist—it was late November, there were clouds in the sky, a hint of chill on the breeze. Snow was coming, maybe. I start my day feeding the livestock. First the chickens, to keep ‘em from fussing; then the horses next. On special occasions I’ll put apples out for the cows but haven’t had any apples in a while. The Johanson’s orchard down the street has been fallow ever since they skipped town.
They tried to tell me to skip town too, but I wouldn’t have it. Talked to Mama and she agreed with me. Only place for us is here on our farm. The Johansons tried to tell us there’s a war on or something. But, my farm keeps me and Mama happy and there’s food on the table.
I was thinkin’ about this as I forked hay over for the horses. That was when I saw bright flashes, and mushroom clouds start to rise up on the horizon. I decided to give the horses a little extra.
