Crunch: Revisit the Lonely Lighthouse
We stopped receiving letters weeks ago. I’m embarrassed that it took so long for us to notice. I think each of the three people who received letters from him thought maybe the other had received one—we never thought to check. When another week passed and we didn’t receive a letter a second time, that’s when we thought to ask.
It took another week to prepare. We didn’t know what to prepare for. And then we embarked on the journey south—the long road to the Lighthouse.
I volunteered to lead the journey. Everyone else shifted awkwardly. No one liked the lighthouse, even though we all needed it. Even though we all knew, one by one, it would call each of us. A teenager, son of one of our neighbors, also volunteered. He looked at me and said, quietly—“Gets me out of the house.” None objected.
We left at daybreak, and the long road stretched endlessly before us. As the sun began to set, we could smell the sea.
The lighthouse showed itself over the horizon shortly before the little cabin, but it was still a long while before we arrived.
The lighthouse was empty. Doors swinging open in the wind; glass shattered about the catwalk, no vehicle, and no sign of our friend.
It was dark, the waves pounded at the cliffs, the wind whistled through the broken windows, and a chill entered my soul. This was unlike the lighthouse. This was unlike our friend.

1. Well, yes and no. There were times I thought I felt a calling and now I'm not sure it was. Then again...
2. Sharks got him. Very sad.
3. I like a large fountain drink myself. Back when I commuted across the river to work, I have to admit, sometimes I'd pop into the gas station for one of their hot dogs. Now that's a snack. Ah, good times.
I have no idea what happened but you have me engaged.
