State of Gibberish
October was a weird month and I can’t really explain why. I had a lot of ambition for October and didn’t quite get to where I wanted to be until the very last moment. Though, I did accomplish a lot IRL that needed to be accomplished, and for that reason it was a productive month for Scoot, even without considering the late launch of DUEL.
November could be an easy month and it could be a difficult one. I’ve had a big splash, but I still don’t know how big the waves are going to be. If the waves aren’t big—expect a lot of writing. If the waves are too big—expect less than you normally would.
But this is the threshold, if I survive this month I can survive every month, I just don’t know what things are going to look like now that the “big splash” has come, so it’s been difficult for me to plan.

What I’m Reading
On Substack I’ve been doing a lot of reading!
- COMPLETED her serial Goldgreen (excepting the epilogue, which you can look for this Friday)! This is the second serial she’s published, so hurry up and catch up on it before it goes behind a paywall! Better yet—you may want to consider a paid subscription! Check out her work at . She’s also blasted out a lot of short fiction, so don’t miss it!
- has an ongoing serial over at called Remembrance and I’ve kept up with that throughout October!
- has been riffing off my weekly prompts for some time and they are universally amazing—very much worth the read! He also writes his own excellent serial! It’s Monty-Python-esque, and has the Scoot seal of mad wholesomeness, so if you need something light, look no further than .
- has been continuing his 40 before 40 essay series over at , and I don’t let them wait in my inbox for long! He also started a Smorgasbord series which has some mixed variety content I always enjoy.
- posted a note with some general constructive comments for fiction writers. I think it’s worth reading and great reminders I definitely needed to hear! Check out the note HERE.
I’ve read a lot of great things, but these are a few that come to mind as I write this! I can’t list everything—please forgive me!
The Books I’m reading are few, but I’ve been more intentional about setting aside time for casual reading, which has warmed my heart greatly.
Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu. I finished this recently, and I’ve already bought the second of the trilogy, The Dark Forest.
suggests that the third in the trilogy isn’t worth it, so I am going to pretend it doesn’t exist.100% Complete
With Three Body Problem complete, I am free to continue my adventure in The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkein! I only just recently picked it up to continue reading, but I’ve made a lot more progress than I thought.

What I’m Working On
Weekly Exercises - Weekly exercises have been a blast! Keeping a good thing going through November!
Serial - RIGHT UNDER THE WIRE I got Episode 1 of my serial, DUEL, posted on October 27th. If you missed it, you can read it HERE. I might get Episode 2 out this Friday, I’ve made great headway 👀 consider this a soft, quiet announcement for readers of these updates.
Flash Fiction - Did you see I got bit by a Flash Fiction Bug and posted a story, “Scoot’s ‘Pinocchio’”? It’s an allegorical twist on the classic Pinocchio tale, I hope you check it out and enjoy!
Secret Project - I’ll let you know when this gets announced! I’m not at liberty to spoil it. But it should be coming in November!
Drafts - OK Honestly all the same things from last time are still sitting in my drafts, most of my focus has gone into getting the Serial out.
Writing About Writing - If the “big splash” is little waves, I am going to try to get this Writing about Writing article out. I plan to take business strategies I learned when I did my MBA and apply them to the writing hustle.
I have a draft titled “[faust]”—same as last month. I didn’t get anything written on this for the Lunar Awards, so it remains languishing in my drafts. That’s alright—drafts age like wine and not like bread.
There’s a draft titled “another muaddib”. This one’s marinating as well—I’m excited for it.

Great update! I don't know how you manage all the writing you do, especially when you include your prolific Notes-ing. Hope you can maintain it through the big splash!
