I would like to know what the clerk thought. I think the fact that there's subjective truth makes story telling interesting. I like books that tell the story through different narrators - if it is done right it makes for an interesting mystery - what really happened?!
Good example of why you should never try to befriend your neighbors. Stick with people a little further away so if it all goes south in some mutually incomprehensible manner you can more easily ignore each other.
Humans are so subjective. We sometimes might as well live in different universes. I had a neighbor once who used to give me presents. Once she gave me a tiny can of generic Spam. I didn’t even know there was a generic version of Spam. Later she trapped one of my cats and left her outside for hours in the freezing rain. When I confronted her about it she informed me that we were neighbors and thus had to be nice to each other. Then she left me a manilla interoffice envelope covered with Biblical scripture, containing a truly awful sweater. True story.
And she’d been friendly toward previous and later outdoor cats, too. This wasn’t a cat-hating thing. Once she called me over to the (inadequate) fence between our yards where she was watering her asparagus plants, and pointed out that the water was crossing over into my yard slightly, and going down a tiny hole, and demanded I do something about this.
1. I couldn't think of anything offhand, but I checked my Facebook which was where I used to post questions like this and now I wonder what Sarah thought when Abraham and Isaac got back from Mount Moriah. Did she know about the whole sacrifice deal? What happened when she found out? That must've been some conversation, huh?
2. As a lawyer, YES. (I mean, I'm not a practicing one, but even so, YES).
3. ...I can do frozen pizzas or grilled cheese sandwiches, and that's about it.

Or--if you DO befriend your neighbors, maybe get to know them a bit before serving them food. LOL!
