This exercise comes from the fact that my desire to explain things inhibits my ability to write magic and fantasy.
If you have ideas for Prompts, Crunches, Sprints, Relays, Stretches, or other writing exercises in the future, please leave them in the comments! If you would like to write your own take for this exercise, please comment with a link so that I can see what you wrote and support your work, maybe even share your version with my subscribers. Please let me know if you have any thoughts, comments, or constructive criticisms as well!
Enjoy!
Crunch: Write about a Wizard
The wise man came upon the wizard in the town square. He was surrounded by children who were cooing appreciatively. The wise man watched, amused, from a distance, to see what the wizard was doing.
The wizard snapped his fingers and pulled a rabbit out of his hat. And then another. And another. He pulled five rabbits out of his hat. Then he snapped his fingers again, and the rabbits all disappeared. He waved a stick around and drew sparkling shapes in the sky—he blew a long stream of smoke out of his mouth and made dancing shapes with the whisps of smoke.
Eventually the wizard dismissed the crowd of children, and began packing up a big bag. The wise man approached him, and applauded as he did.
“Well done, Wizard! That was quite a show—those children were enraptured by your performance.”
“Performance?” replied the wizard. “Not a performance—demonstration!”
“Demonstration of what? Surely you don’t expect me to believe that was ACTUAL magic. There are tricks! You have some contraptions hidden in your robes, or in your hat.”
“You’re right, I don’t expect you to believe it. Nevertheless, that is exactly what it was! I am a wizard, not a charlatan!”
“How do you do it? Magic! Is it something I can learn? How does it work?”
“How does what work?”
“Magic!”
“it just works!” He snapped his fingers and a rabbit appeared in his hands. “Would you like one?”
“No!”
“Shame!” he set the rabbit down.
