The phrase "delightful darkness" makes me think of history, not fiction.
For instance, Mac Classic screensavers.
(The originals and early expansion packs through 2.0 were the best in my opinion; I feel like at some point later the popularity shifted to more gimmicky, sophomoric and/or media tie-in variations, and even aside from that, I preferred the mostly basic graphics and the art style that went with them.)
