Divine Thunder

“Divine Thunder was listed as two hundred to one odds in the fourth race, “ said Judy with a smile. “Divine Thunder?” she mused. It was an intriguing name.

“It sounds inspirational. Fastest feet in the west or a roller derby moniker,” suggested Cale.

Judy wrinkled her nose at those ideas. “I prefer to think of him as a horse that pounds the ground to move ahead of the pack.”

“At 200 to 1 odds? It may take Divine Thunder to propel him to victory,” replied Cale. “I would suggest that you pick something else.”

Judy’s warning flare went up at this point. She turned and walked to the wager booth. Cale stood thinking about the wager she was about to make. She plunked her money down on Divine Thunder before stalking away to find quieter corners where she could work on her next bet.

“They’re at the post,” lifted her mind away from the odds sheet. She quickly walked over to the window and looked out. Judy groaned loudly as Divine Thunder brought up the rear rather quickly as they headed to the first turn. She didn't realize how tightly she was holding onto the wager sheet when the horses reached the backstretch with Divine Thunder still in the rear. Suddenly the move was being made. Quickly he closed the distance and was now approaching third on the last turn. Feet kept moving, adrenaline surging Judy found herself screaming encouragement. Divine Thunder pounded down the last stretch increasing his lead as he crossed the finish line.

Judy looked down at her wager. 200 to one odds.

“How did you know?” asked Cale as he approached, the scar at the corner of his mouth twitching.

“I just read the odds sheet like you,” she replied, recalling the conversation a few minutes ago.

Cale could not let the it go. “What do you recommend in the fifth race?” he inquired. He wanted to see if her luck rubbed off on him.

“A hot bath,” intoned Judy as she picked up her winnings and headed for the exit. Cale had outworn her company tonight.
