What a delightful letter! This style of letter-writing is something you just don't get in this email age. I am very much looking forward to the next episode.
This captures the written letter tone perfectly (a few divergent thoughts, remembering past events). I'm reminded of the letters between Mina and Lucy in Dracula. You must have taken a pencil/pen and written on paper first to do it so well.
Pride and Prejudice in space indeed! I love that the very first letter is centered around a character entering religious life. I can’t wait to see where this goes from here!
I like how the fact that, oh, by the way, we're on another planet, is almost casually dropped in; it sets the tone of the letter perfectly. I feel like you've captured a little world here. Beautiful.
I find it interesting that the author of the letter doesn't seem to react one way or another to the moral nature of the core choice. He seems to judge all of the people around Mary for their reaction, but not to judge Mary... in either way... for her choice.
In a highly religious society 'If it makes her happy' is typically not a standard used to judge actions... at least not centrally. "Will this action please God?" "Is it honouring to her father?" These are more typical standards.
And the cloister will take her in opposition to her father? That's an interesting facet of this society. If I were the father I wouldn't envy the cloister.

Loved it! I can’t wait for the next ones.
I am so, so excited for this series. The tone, the character relationships, all of it.
Love this format
