I love to play poker, and I think it's kind of pointless to not play for real money. Your story's not too shabby either...

Agreed--I've tried to organize a poker night once or twice "for fun" and with literally no stakes people don't bet like it matters!

Ah, I love a good closing line, and that one is just perfect for a Western-style story. (Mind you, the closest I've come to a Western is I saw My Darling Clementine once, and the M*A*S*H episode where they watched it in a camp movie night, but still).

I've never played poker, and I still don't understand the rules; I'm considering writing a story from a character with that perspective. :D

Favorite party snack, though? Pringles. Definitely Pringles. Wavy Lay's chips next, if possible.

I would LOVE to see a poker game from the POV of someone who doesn't know! You should look up a video of people playing and put your character in the middle hahaha!

Pringles are amazing, I'm with you there! Thank you for reading!

There's a James Bond book, Casino Royale, where the author actually takes the trouble to explain how baccarat works, and I had to rewind that section of the audiobook several times because I was like, "FINALLY". So many times you see card games in movies and shows and whatnot, and they're just playing, and I have to deduce from context whether the card played is good or bad. (this isn't a problem, usually, BUT STILL).

I love the Daniel Craig Casino Royale but they played Texas Hold 'em instead of Baccarat. I tried looking up Baccarat but you need a few more people than I've been able to muster! That's awesome, I ought to look up the Bond explanation.

Ooo great way to end it, I'm picturing everyone full of lead.

I enjoy a good game of canasta. Played with my dad for most of my teens (alongside Go, Carcasonne, and many other boardgames). Sat down for a few hands of poker but avoided the real money games that friends hosted.

Not a big snacker but I like any main meal item shrunk down, like tiny quiches, tiny pies, tiny sausage rolls, etc. Just great fun. Also partial to salt and pepper Kettle crisps (or any thick and crunchy crisp) with houmous.

I've never played Canasta but I have played Go and it's impossibly difficult to understand haha!

That's perfectly described--"main meal item shrunk down"--I'm all for that as well, those are always amazing!

1. I'm not a big card game player.

2. No, I have an aversion for risk so gambling is out of the question for me. I once shot craps in Vegas though, that was fun.

3. Doritos, for sure. But I'm always on the lookout for the angel that comes to the party with a crockpot full of meatballs or buffalo chicken dip.

Aversion to risk and gambling is probably really smart. My accounting buddies I used to work with were obsessed with Craps for a while and I never understood it. This guy bought a BOOK of strategies. At the end of the day you're just gambling!

"Angel with crockpot" is such a great phrase and so, so accurate! you know it's amazing if they bring it in a crockpot!

Would LOVE to learn why the sheriff is after Lone Wyatt. And I love that Lone Wyatt was a bit concerned with manners only to be a wanted man himself. Very cool way to flip our notion of the main character up front.

1). I enjoy card games but did not grow up playing them. I don't mind learning as I go as long as I have folks willing to guide me along. I'm not afraid of messing up so that's a plus for me but could be frustraing for any teacher.

2) I've not played poker for real money but would be okay doing so but only for smaller amounts. Betting doesn't really do anything for me and given my lack of experience of poker I would be sure to be out of money quick, fast and in a hurry.

3) My wife and I always go a bit big when hosting. A favorite snack of ours to make is what I call "Everything Rolls." They're bite-sized sandwiches made of Kings Hiwaiian rolls with ham, swiss cheese and some spicy brown mustard. Lighly buttered and topped with everything bagel seasoning. Baked for about 15 min. to get the cheese nice and melted. It's.... phenomenal.

Also, the music of "Doolin-Dalton" by The Eagles would play nicely in the background of this story. Not 100% applicable story wise but a nice western feel...

TBH I would love to know what's up with Lone Wyatt too haha! When I started writing this he was supposed to be nobody but he became somebody really quickly!

Poker is so simple but so strategic--like the best games. Chess and Cards, hard to get much more ancient than that. I have never played for real money either but maybe putting a $25 giftcard as the prize for the potwinner would be enough to get people to act like it's real money. It's something behavioral about how people treat the chips--it's fascinating. If it's not real money, going "All in" on a hand doesn't carry as much weight!

Everything Rolls sound amazing. Gotta figure out what it takes to get on that list!

Doolin Dalton was a fun song, I love western vibes and that hit the nail on the head, great recommendation!
