Haunting scenario in all the best ways. This story actually made it to my real-life nightmares 😂😅😭

Well that was brutal. And no doubt they'll lose many more people before a colony can be established. Is there going to be more?

(And what do you mean the captain wasn't infected by alien spores?! That was on my Hearken bingo card.)

This specific series is done, but Out of the Black shows where they end up. I have no stories planned YET to discuss the intervening years, but these folks are important to the SEU lore. Expect to hear more from them!

Oh my gosh, they made it. New leaders are made in these nightmare scenarios. I wonder what happens next. Great story!

I kept looking at how much was left and getting more and more anxious, but you pulled it off! I loved the ending with the real leadership shining through. It always does.

What a bittersweet ending! Ariel has become my favorite character in the series, and I will forever be a hater of the captain.

I second Kailani's petition to have the captain infected by alien spores.

Ok, so when I first finished reading this serial, it did not sit right with me. Even knowing what's going to happen in the future isn't enough for a hopeful ending - it still feels off-kilter and disastrous, so if you were going for that, A+.

I mean, there's a clear bad guy, but I still think everybody in this story is part of the problem and has been grossly mismanaged by their dystopian evil empire. Harker... you know what, I'm mad at him. He has all the skills and sense of responsibility necessary to succeed in his role (it's not a democracy! It's the space navy and they're still on his ship!) *except* he doesn't trust his crew. He's so close!! He could have told Matthew that the JU isn't coming to save them, licitly made the same decisions using the executive power vested in him as the only representative of law and order for lightyears around, and been the hero of the story as they seek out a new home. Instead he had to lose the plot along with whatever honor there is in the Jovian uniform. Maddening.

It would be interesting to watch Ariel develop into a mature leader for the colony; she clearly has the potential and it was remiss of whoever was supposed to screen the colonists to let a budding political dissident onboard. But in the meantime, nobody is doing their job!!! and now you have suckered me into spendng all day thinking about characters who got on my nerves. Bravo.

Beautifully done, Scoot! I loved the message of hope at the end. Really powerful.

What's that thing about how when the hard times come, leaders aren't chosen, they emerge? I suppose Ariel is the embodiment of that. 🔥
