State of Gibberish
January has been a busy month, and I am exhausted just thinking about it, so let’s cut right to the chase!
What I’m Reading
On Substack I haven’t read as much as I liked!
I wasn’t going to tag anyone because I’ve been a terrible reader. I’m behind on many things I enjoy reading, so February I’m hoping to catch up on my favorite stacks!
I did, however, catch up on 3 serials last weekend that were a blast:
- ’s serial, REMEMBERANCE, at ! I’ve been invested in this one for a while so I was maybe 4 episodes behind, it was a great read. I don’t want to spoil it, but there’s been 20+ episodes so far and it’s been so much set up we are getting some STELLAR payoff. Best time to start reading was 20 episodes ago, second best time to start reading is today!
- ’s serial, A TOWN CALLED EVENING, at ! It’s got western, it’s got spooky, it’s got evocative imagery. I started from zero and read everything last weekend and boy I am glad I caught up. There’s a lot more planned and if you haven’t read this yet there’s a lot you’re missing!
- ’s short serial, FLAT TIRE, OVER, at . This was SUCH a wild ride—it swung back and forth between present hardship and past trauma, between paranoia and clairvoyance. It was fascinating and poignant and thrilling—I highly recommend it.
The Books I am reading are few but fair, and I didn’t spend a lot of time reading books either. It was a weird month!
Dark Forest by Cixin Liu. Enjoying this so far, but as with Three Body it took a while to ramp up. Paired with a weird month—only doubled my progress from last month!
12.54% Complete
The Two Towers by JRR Tolkein. Just establishing the reading list—with Fellowship complete, this is next!
0% Complete
Joan of Arc by Mark Twain. Putting this “back” on the list—I had started it a long time ago but never finished it.
66.81% Complete (I was farther along than I realized!)
The Return of the King by JRR Tolkein. Taking a break between each story in the series has been a good decision. This will be the end of the LOTR Saga!

What I’m Working On
Weekly Exercises - Weekly exercises have kept a-goin!
Serial - Duel concluded with Episode 12 and then the retrospective a week later. This was so fun to do, but I am so exhausted! Taking a break!
The Selected Letters of Armin R. Tolor started this month as well, the second letter is on it’s way and will hit your inboxes on February 3rd! This is what I have been hyping on notes as Pride and Prejudice in space. It is a low-energy serial, it will release every three weeks, and the whole thing has already been written so it will run until November 2nd.
Flash Fiction - Who Are You? was a more personal short story that explored interior worlds compared to the usual exterior worlds. You all received it lovingly, and I am grateful for you!
Voice Acting - I started publishing readings of my own stories from The Volume with the podcast feature, starting with the first “flash fiction” story I published, which is actually something I wrote long before substack: The Night World!
Writing About Writing - I guess I finally did get that Worldbuilding post out, so you can read that too! Worldbuilding with Training Wheels.
Drafts - often aspirational, but this keeps them on my radar
Writing about writing—looking at applying business strategies to our newsletters, is still in the “ideation” phase of writing.

Projects In Progress
For a complete list of 2024 special projects, check out the December update! For now, I will give you an update on just what I have made progress on!
The Gibberish Anthology
This project slowed while I rode the waves of a surprisingly busy January.
finished the cover art and I posted a sneak peek to notes, and didn’t save it so I can’t link it to you! If you missed it you’ll have to either go spelunking or wait for me to drop it a second time 😂
Thank you for sticking with me my friends! I hope this update gives you a good sense of what’s inbound to your inbox!
Happy writing, and God bless!

Very excited for the Gibberish Anthology! But who is this 'Scott' fellow?
This is such a great month-end summary! With so much silence coming from me this month, I may need to do something similar just to let people know I’m OK.
